Let the scalpel to the book page and let it run!

I am so excited about the new work I’m currently producing. It takes me back to one of my first encounters with ‘a different type of book’ or ‘a whole new reading experience’. That experience was my first encounter with the tome A Humument by the incredibly talented and renowned artist,  Tom Phillips. You just have to check out his drawings amongst other delights, quite sublime!

So, I noticed my continuation of doodling with a scalpel, a method that allows me to draw without my usual anxiety of  ‘not being able to draw’. The outcomes are often abstract, graphical and full of expression. I will of course post examples of these soon. For some reason, I am not quite ready to share these just yet?

Well, the scalpel did just run, and this process I began to apply to my books. I noticed how easy I journeyed from one part of the page to another, realising that this was enabling me to be a little less concerned about the context of the work and more interested in the process.

The other joy, is that now I am keen as mustard to be in the studio, no matter how cold and quiet it is!

Bring on the books!

Finally moving forward (or wading out of treacle!)

It really has been a ridiculous length of time since I posted sharing new happenings. Gosh, the old seasonal break and other such distractions really took their toll.

Now, leaving that parked, exciting news… I have been accepted to show at Turn the Page 2013 in Norwich 3rd and 4th May. Very excited about being part of what I understand to be a really great event.

Rather deliciously, this has helped stimulate an ongoing period of flow, that I am certainly riding till the last wave crashes.

I have continued with my first ever artist book, now all the separate works photographed by the ever talented Roger Dorey ready for the next stage of production (ok, so not clarifying the approach, because of course, way too much experimental options popping up for me to define a final solution just yet).

Rather wonderfully, this process has also led me onto more experimentation, linking this recent ‘artist book’, my doodles, that most definitely keep me sane and a re-acquaintance with perhaps my original book art  inspiration Tom Phillips A Humument

Of course, I’ll be sharing some samples as that particular work grows, but at present, it is most definitely at the coveted nurturing stage!

And finally, I have just been appointed as a Director at Digswell Arts Trust, where I was fortunate enough to have a fellowship until quite recently. I am very excited about the way the Trust is evolving and feel completely honoured to have been asked to continue to be part of this great local organisation.

Exciting times!

East Contemporary Art: A Collection of 21st Century Practice.

I am very excited and proud to announce that I have had two works accepted into this unique and ground breaking project.

I have just come back from the launch party at The University of Suffolk at the Waterfront building in Ipswich, where the collection will be housed.

Thank you to the lovely Mary Down and Freya Purdue for being such good company, and both, of course, also have works in this new collection.

Looking forward to seeing this project grow and the launch exhibition September 2013.

I will keep you posted as this evolves. In the meantime, here is a wee picture (rather bad one I must say) of myself and my two fine companions in the front row at the launch talk.

Busy distractions

I have been somewhat preoccupied by other work lately, the kind that pays the bills alas therefore not being able to find too much time in the studio. When I have managed to make it in, all of my focus has been developing my first artist book. Ok, honestly, perhaps not completely ALL of my focus. I always need some necessary side steps to doodle, think, digest and return to the task at hand, evidence of this below.

I am actually very pleased with how the book has been coming along and indeed it is rather delicious seeing the sea of cut pages filling the desk at the moment.

Work in Progress

I have finally finished cutting the pages, and I have been slightly surprised as to how dark the narrative has become as the work has evolved. I am heavily influenced, of course, by the original book content, though I am always careful not to read the novel first. Reading the new tome, I can also see I have been influenced by current affairs.

I am now ready to mount them in preparation for photographing. So, if anyone can recommend a great artist book publisher, who maybe interested in a new artist book author, please do let me know.

🙂

days like these…months like that!

Ok, so I have been doing alot of procrastinating recently. Life just kind of, well, gets in the way. So here are some of my doodles / visual explosions that ultimately, but sometimes painstakingly slowly, unravels the brain.

And then I began some self portraits for the first time ever…
If nothing else, undeniably cathartic… thank goodness for creative outlets.

I know days like that!

Rather delicious working around the problem, that really is my process… it’s always the events around the main stage that unravels the brain. Doodles are most definitely my most effective tool and my most effective time waster!

So found this wonderfully rich animation that illustrates the point, excuse the pun!

Enjoy!

Devil’s bit scabious

Ok, so experimentation continues apace. You just never know where the journey will take you, I mean, who knew I would be dabbling with a film approach?

Not sure where this is going at the moment, if anywhere, but I am really mesmerized by this at the moment. Just need to sit back and question what it is that captures me?

Take a look (note…this is a slow reveal!).

Serendipity

Serendipity has for some time been my favourite word. I have, for the last couple of years, based my process around the delights that serendipity can bring. So, how wonderful when exploring a new theme for some work…that these have caught my attention… Of course, what this now means is my mind is wandering along an altogether new path and i am very much enjoying the journey 🙂
